Show Your Tax and Compliance Chops

This role lives at the intersection of daily bookkeeping and statutory compliance. Hiring managers will probe how comfortably you handle iTax filings and whether you can keep the books clean under pressure.

    1. Lead with your CPA K and ICPAK status: Put your certification and membership number prominently on your CV. If you're actively practicing, say so. This is the first screen they'll use.

    2. Prove your iTax fluency: List specific returns you've filed (VAT, PAYE, corporate) and any penalties you've helped avoid. A concrete example of a tricky filing will set you apart.

    3. Show QuickBooks or ERP depth: Don't just list the software—describe how you've used it for reconciliations, reporting, or month-end close. Mention any customizations or automation you've done.

    4. Quantify your budgeting impact: If you've helped prepare budgets, state the size of the budget and how you monitored variances. Numbers make your analytical skills tangible.

    5. Prepare for a practical test: Many accounting interviews include a quick task—like reconciling a bank statement or spotting errors. Brush up on your double-entry basics and iTax rates.

    6. Highlight your attention to detail: Accounting errors are costly. Give an example of a discrepancy you caught and how you resolved it. This shows the vigilance they need.

    7. Know the healthcare sector's quirks: If you have experience with medical practices, mention it. If not, research common accounting issues in healthcare, like insurance claims and patient billing.

    8. Ask smart questions: When you get to the interview, ask about their current accounting software, the size of the finance team, and the biggest accounting challenge they face. It shows you're already thinking like their accountant.
