Show ISO 15189 Discipline On Paper Before You Walk Into the Lab

Quality management roles in clinical labs get flooded with vague 'attention to detail' claims. Hiring teams for this post want proof you can run audits, close nonconformities, and keep accreditation evidence audit-ready under pressure.

    1. Lead with your QMS track record: On your CV, list the specific quality systems you have managed, naming the standards (ISO 15189, ISO 9001) and the accreditation bodies you have dealt with. For each role, quantify your impact—for example, 'reduced nonconformities by 30% within a year' or 'maintained zero major findings across two surveillance audits.'

    2. Prepare a portfolio of your audit work: Bring samples of internal audit schedules, audit reports, or corrective action plans you have authored (with confidential details redacted). This gives the panel concrete evidence of your documentation skills and your ability to drive corrective actions to closure.

    3. Rehearse the ISO 15189:2022 clauses: Be ready to discuss key clauses like management responsibility, internal audits, and corrective actions. Interviewers often probe whether you know the difference between a nonconformity and a risk, and how you would handle a recurring quality issue.

    4. Show your root-cause analysis toolkit: Expect scenario questions like 'A test result was reported late—how do you investigate?' Walk them through a structured method like 5 Whys or fishbone diagrams, and explain how you would verify the effectiveness of the corrective action.

    5. Demonstrate your accreditation experience: If you have been through KENAS or similar assessments, describe your role in preparing for them—what documents you updated, how you coordinated staff, and how you handled the assessors' findings.

    6. Talk about managing people and processes: This role involves supporting staff training and competency assessment. Give examples of how you have trained lab staff on quality procedures or raised quality awareness across a team.

    7. Prepare for data questions: You will be expected to monitor quality indicators and present performance to management. Be ready to discuss how you would track turnaround times, error rates, or EQA performance, and how you would present that data to non-laboratory stakeholders.

    8. Ask sharp questions of your own: Show genuine interest by asking about the lab's current QMS maturity, recent audit findings, or the team structure. This signals you are already thinking about how you would add value from day one.
