Master the SME Credit Conversation Before You Apply

This role is not about cold calling—it's about advisory selling backed by sharp financial analysis. Hiring managers will probe how you read a balance sheet, spot risk, and structure a facility that works for both the customer and the bank.

    1. Show your credit analysis toolkit: On your CV, list specific tools and methods you use to analyze SME financials—cash flow projections, ratio analysis, and early warning indicators. Mention any credit certification or formal training you have, as this is a clear advantage.

    2. Quantify your portfolio impact: Use numbers to show growth you've driven: percentage increase in assets, number of new relationships, or reduction in non-performing loans. Concrete metrics beat generic claims.

    3. Prepare a mini case study: Think of an SME you advised—walk through how you assessed their financials, structured a credit solution, and managed the relationship. Be ready to explain the outcome and what you learned.

    4. Know the Kenyan SME landscape: Be ready to discuss sectors like trade, manufacturing, and agribusiness, and common financing gaps. Show you understand the market realities and regulatory environment.

    5. Brush up on trade finance and cash management: Even if your experience is limited, show willingness to learn. Mention any exposure to letters of credit, invoice discounting, or digital banking solutions.

    6. Demonstrate stakeholder finesse: This role sits between customers, credit teams, and risk. Give examples of how you've balanced customer needs with internal risk policies to get deals approved.

    7. Highlight your advisory approach: The posting stresses advisory over cold calling. Share how you've built trust through insight—like recommending the right facility or flagging a cash flow risk before it became a problem.

    8. Ask smart questions in the interview: Ask about the bank's SME strategy, portfolio quality targets, and how relationship managers collaborate with credit. This shows you're thinking beyond the job description.
