How to Apply: Interested and qualified candidates should apply through the Mombasa County Public Service Board recruitment portal at recruitment.mcpsb.go.ke.

Prove You Can Run a Recycling and Disposal System, Not Just Talk About Waste

County solid waste roles attract many applicants who can recite environmental laws but few who can show they have actually managed a landfill, a recycling line, or a composting programme. This Assistant Director position sits at the centre of Mombasa's waste operations, so your application must show operational muscle and stakeholder coordination, not just academic knowledge.

    1. Map your experience to the four facility types: The posting names recycling, recovery, treatment and disposal facilities. On your CV, list each facility you have worked with and state your exact role, tonnage handled, and staff supervised. If you managed a landfill cell, say so. If you ran a composting windrow programme, give the daily throughput. Hiring panels for county director roles scan for this specificity because it separates desk officers from operators.

    2. Show you know Kenyan waste law cold: The advert requires knowledge of county and national legislation. Prepare to discuss the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act, the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022, and Mombasa County waste bylaws. In your cover letter, cite one specific regulation and explain how you applied it in a previous role. This proves you can translate legal text into operational decisions.

    3. Quantify your stakeholder engagement: The role coordinates with government agencies, private recyclers and communities. Instead of saying you 'liaised with stakeholders', describe a concrete engagement: how many community groups, which recyclers, what agreement was reached. County panels value candidates who have navigated the politics of waste collection between informal groups and formal contractors.

    4. Prepare a 90-day operational diagnosis: Assistant Director interviews often include a scenario question about improving a struggling waste system. Before the interview, study Mombasa's known waste challenges such as the Mwakirunge landfill and marine litter. Draft a one-page outline of how you would assess facility performance, staff capacity and contractor compliance in your first three months. Bring it to the interview if allowed.

    5. Address the strategic leadership course head-on: The posting says a strategic leadership course of at least six weeks is an added advantage. If you have done one, list it prominently with the institution and dates. If you have not, mention any equivalent management training and state your willingness to undertake the course. Do not ignore this line; it signals you read the advert carefully.

    6. Leverage your professional membership: Membership of the Environment Institute of Kenya (EIK) or a relevant body is another added advantage. If you are a member, include your membership number and standing. If you are not yet a member, start the application process now and mention it as 'in progress' only if true. Panels sometimes verify these claims, so accuracy matters.

    7. Prepare for technical questions on treatment and recovery: Expect questions on leachate management, landfill gas, material recovery facility design, and composting parameters. Revise the basics of waste characterisation and mass balance. A strong answer might explain how you would reduce contamination in a recycling stream by adjusting collection routes and community sorting education.

    8. Demonstrate staff supervision at scale: The role supervises staff responsible for recycling, recovery, treatment and disposal operations. Prepare examples of how you have managed shift rosters, safety compliance, and performance reviews for a dispersed team. County waste teams often include casual labourers and machine operators, so show you can handle both technical and HR dimensions without losing operational focus.
