Show Your CAD Portfolio and Field Sense

This role sits at the intersection of design and real-world farm conditions. Hiring managers will want to see that you can turn a site survey into a workable drawing and a drawing into a realistic BOQ.

    1. Lead with a tailored portfolio: Bring a portfolio of your best CAD drawings, especially any greenhouse or irrigation layouts. Even if they are from school or personal projects, show that you understand scale, elevation, and water flow. Label each drawing clearly so the reviewer sees your thinking.

    2. Prove your BOQ skills: Be ready to walk through a Bill of Quantities you have prepared. Explain how you estimated material quantities, accounted for waste, and priced items. If you have a sample, bring it — it shows you can handle the estimation side of the role.

    3. Speak the language of irrigation: Brush up on key terms like drip lines, sprinkler spacing, pressure head, and flow rate. You may be asked how you would design a system for a specific crop or plot size. Show that you can calculate basic hydraulic needs.

    4. Show you know the field: Greenhouse and irrigation design is not just about software. Talk about any time you have visited a farm, taken measurements, or dealt with real-world constraints like uneven terrain or water pressure issues. That field sense sets you apart.

    5. Highlight your software toolkit: AutoCAD is non-negotiable, but mention any other tools you know — like Revit, SketchUp, or irrigation design software. If you have certifications, list them clearly. The more you can show, the better.

    6. Prepare for a technical test: Many employers give a short drafting or estimation exercise. Practice redrawing a simple layout or preparing a mini BOQ under time pressure. It shows you can work accurately and quickly.

    7. Ask smart questions: When you get the chance, ask about the typical project size, the crops they serve, and how the design team coordinates with installation crews. That shows you are thinking about the whole project lifecycle.

    8. Show you can support the senior designer: This role supports the Senior Technical Designer, so emphasize your ability to take direction, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly. Give an example of a time you supported a senior colleague successfully.
