Prove Your Field Engineering Mettle Before You Even Step Into Makindu

Water Mission's engineering internship is a hands-on role where you'll be using mWater, hydraulic models, and AutoCAD to extend water supply to real households. The hiring team wants to see that you understand the full cycle from customer application to meter activation, not just textbook theory.

    1. Showcase Your mWater and Mobile Data Skills: The role explicitly requires smartphone and mobile data collection proficiency. On your CV, mention any experience using mobile apps for field data collection, even if it was for a class project or volunteer work. If you've used mWater or similar tools like ODK or KoboToolbox, highlight that prominently. Be ready to describe how you ensure data accuracy in the field.

    2. Demonstrate Hydraulic Modeling Know-How: You'll be working with EPANET and hydraulic models to confirm connection feasibility. Brush up on the basics of water distribution modeling and be prepared to discuss how you would input GPS data and interpret model outputs. If you have coursework or projects involving EPANET, bring them up in your interview.

    3. Highlight AutoCAD and BOQ Preparation: The internship involves preparing material schedules and cost estimates. Show that you can read and create engineering drawings in AutoCAD, and that you understand how to translate designs into bills of quantities. Practice explaining how you would calculate material requirements for a simple water connection.

    4. Align with Water Mission's Faith and Values: This is a faith-based organization that values Love, Excellence, and Integrity. Your application should reflect a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a willingness to serve others. Be ready to share how your values align with the company's mission, but keep it genuine and not forced.

    5. Emphasize Your Recent Graduation Status: The posting specifies graduation within the last year (2025) or awaiting graduation in 2026. Make sure your CV clearly states your graduation date and includes a letter of completion from your university. If you're awaiting graduation, explain your timeline and availability.

    6. Prepare for Fieldwork Realities: The role is based in Makindu with regular site visits to Kambu, Muthingini, Sultan Hamud, and other areas. Show that you're physically ready for fieldwork and willing to travel. If you've done any field surveys or site visits before, describe what you learned about working in remote or challenging conditions.

    7. Prove Your Analytical and Project Management Skills: You'll be assessing customer applications, determining feasibility, and following up on connections. Use examples from your studies or past internships where you analyzed data, planned a project, or coordinated with a team to achieve a goal. Quantify your impact where possible.

    8. Communicate Clearly in English: Excellent verbal and written communication in English is required. Your application materials should be error-free, and during interviews, articulate your thoughts clearly. Practice explaining technical concepts in simple terms, as you'll be interacting with customers and technical teams.
