Master the Art of the Upsell in Guest Relations

In this role, your ability to turn a booking into a memorable stay is key. Hiring managers will look for candidates who can balance warm hospitality with sharp sales instincts, especially when handling reservations and guest requests.

    1. Showcase your PMS and OTA fluency: On your CV, list specific hotel property management systems (like Opera or Protel) and online travel agency platforms (like Booking.com or Expedia) you have used. Mention any reports you generated or how you managed inventory across channels.

    2. Quantify your upselling wins: If you have successfully upsold room upgrades, spa packages, or dining experiences, include numbers. For example, 'Increased average room rate by 15% through targeted upsells at check-in.'

    3. Prepare for scenario-based questions: Expect questions like 'How would you handle an overbooked night?' or 'A guest is unhappy with their room—what do you do?' Practice structured responses that show empathy, problem-solving, and a focus on guest satisfaction.

    4. Highlight your communication skills: Guest relations is all about clear, warm communication. Provide examples of how you handled difficult conversations, resolved complaints, or coordinated with other departments like housekeeping or maintenance.

    5. Emphasize teamwork under pressure: Resorts can get chaotic during peak seasons. Share a story where you supported a colleague or stayed calm during a rush, showing you can be a reliable team player.

    6. Know the Mombasa hospitality scene: Research Bliss Resort and the local tourism market. Mention any knowledge of Mombasa's attractions, events, or guest demographics to show you are locally aware and can cater to diverse visitors.

    7. Polish your phone and email etiquette: Reservations often start with a phone call or email. Demonstrate your professional tone and attention to detail in your application and any pre-interview communication.

    8. Show genuine passion for hospitality: Let your enthusiasm for creating great guest experiences shine through. Talk about why you love this industry and what you find rewarding about guest relations.
