Designing Gender-Transformative Childcare: What the Hiring Panel Will Probe

This consultancy demands more than a CV—it calls for a sharp grasp of the care economy and feminist frameworks. The panel will look for evidence that you can turn the 5R model into actionable programme design, not just theory.

    1. Map your experience to the 5R model: Be ready to show how you've applied Recognize, Reduce, Redistribute, Reward, and Represent in past projects. Give concrete examples of how you've used each R in programme design, and quantify outcomes where possible.

    2. Show your stakeholder facilitation toolkit: This role hinges on engaging caregivers, adolescents, and communities. Prepare to discuss specific participatory methods you've used—like co-creation workshops or community mapping—and how you handled power dynamics.

    3. Demonstrate gender-transformative thinking: The panel will probe how you move beyond gender-sensitive to truly transformative approaches. Share examples where you challenged harmful norms or involved men as allies, and explain the results.

    4. Connect childcare to broader systems: Highlight your experience integrating childcare into social protection, education, or health programmes. Be ready to explain how your design would link with Kenya's social protection system, as familiarity is an asset.

    5. Prepare for safeguarding questions: Risk assessment and safeguards are core duties. Have a clear framework for identifying and mitigating risks in childcare settings, especially for vulnerable groups like adolescent mothers and children with disabilities.

    6. Align with UNICEF's gender policy: Familiarize yourself with UNICEF's Gender Policy 2021-2030 and Action Plan 2026-2029. Be ready to articulate how your proposed approach aligns with their emphasis on adolescent girls' health, education, and protection.

    7. Show your research and analytical edge: The literature review is a key deliverable. Prepare to discuss your methodology for synthesizing evidence on childcare models, and how you'd ensure the review is contextually relevant to East Africa.

    8. Communicate with clarity and cultural fluency: With English and Kiswahili required, demonstrate your ability to engage diverse stakeholders. Prepare examples of how you've communicated complex ideas to communities, policymakers, and donors alike.
