Mentoring Young Coders: What to Prepare

Volunteering at a STEM bootcamp is about showing up with energy and a willingness to guide. Here's how to make your mentoring count.

1. Brush up on the tools: Even if you're not an expert, get familiar with Scratch, Roblox, Minecraft, Blockzie, SWAPC, and Arduino. Try a quick tutorial so you can help when learners get stuck.

2. Plan simple activities: Have a few ice-breaker coding challenges ready. For example, a simple Scratch animation or a Minecraft build task can get kids engaged fast.

3. Practice patience: Young learners will have different paces. Be ready to explain concepts multiple times and celebrate small wins.

4. Focus on creativity: Encourage learners to experiment and create their own projects. The goal is to spark curiosity, not just follow instructions.

5. Communicate with parents: If you interact with parents, be clear about what their kids are learning and how they can support at home.

6. Work as a team: Coordinate with other mentors to share tips and manage groups effectively. A unified approach keeps the bootcamp smooth.

7. Be flexible: Activities might not go as planned. Be ready to adapt and switch to backup ideas if something isn't working.

8. Reflect and improve: After each session, think about what worked and what didn't. This helps you grow as a mentor and improves the experience for the next day.
