Show Your Ledger Discipline Before the Interview

Finance roles at schools hinge on trust and precision. Hiring managers will probe how you handle reconciliations, deadlines, and audit trails—so bring proof of your hands-on work with accounting software and real ledgers.

    1. Tailor your CV to accounting tasks: Highlight specific duties like bank reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting. Use numbers to show volume (e.g., 'processed 200+ invoices monthly').

    2. Master QuickBooks and Sage: Be ready to demonstrate your proficiency in these tools. If you have certifications or completed courses, list them. Practice common tasks like journal entries and report generation.

    3. Prepare for audit questions: Expect questions about supporting audits, providing documentation, and maintaining accurate records. Share a specific example where you helped streamline an audit process.

    4. Understand school finance nuances: Research how educational institutions handle budgeting, fee collection, and donor funds. Mention any experience with similar environments.

    5. Highlight your CPA progress: Since CPA Part 2 is required, emphasize your qualification and any ongoing professional development. Be ready to discuss how your accounting knowledge applies to the role.

    6. Show your attention to detail: Provide examples of catching errors or improving processes. For instance, 'Identified a recurring discrepancy in vendor invoices, saving 5% monthly.'

    7. Practice problem-solving scenarios: Be ready for situational questions like 'How would you handle a missing receipt?' or 'How do you prioritize when multiple deadlines clash?'

    8. Demonstrate teamwork and communication: Since you'll collaborate with the Head of Accounts and other departments, share instances where you worked with non-finance staff to clarify requisitions or reports.

CareerSasa Safety Alert: Never pay employers or agencies for interviews, training, or job placement. Does a job request payment? Report it immediately using the "Flag" button. While CareerSasa vets job postings thoroughly, always verify opportunities independently.
