    Job Description

    The Carpenter will report to the Chargehand and Maintenance Manager, upholding DIO values and BATUK charter. The role involves carpentry construction and remodelling work, producing method statements and risk assessments, and using both power and manual tools. The position requires working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions and physical demands.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct carpentry construction work and remodelling with good workmanship, producing specific method statements and risk assessments.
    • Use both power and manual tools, including woodworking machines such as lathes, drill presses, sanders, shapers, and planning machines.
    • Perform tasks including stain-grade trim work, hanging doors, drilling and setting door hardware, and setting windows.
    • Read and understand blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders; erect scaffolding or ladders for above-ground work.
    • Maintain equipment in clean, safe, and serviceable condition; inspect and wear PPE; keep work site tidy.
    • Manage materials and tools, ensuring safe storage and accountability for unused materials.
    • Comply with Health and Safety requirements, risk assessments, and site safety orders; adhere to relevant regulations and codes of practice.
    • Undertake other tasks as directed by Line Management, including potential asbestos competent person duties after training.
    • Be subject to call-back during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays.

    Required Qualifications

    • Minimum of Trade test 1 in carpentry and joinery or woodwork course, with three years working experience.
    • Kenya Certificate of Secondary education (KCSE).
    • Grade 1 Carpentry and Joinery qualification minimum.
    • Valid Kenya driving License Class B, C1 & C.
    • Ability to perform carpentry work on new projects or refurbishments in residential buildings, workshops, stores, or outdoors.
    • Working with power or manual tools within a specific area, each with specific components and discrete tasks.
    • Be aware of occupational hazards and utilise standard safety practices.
    • Be able to risk assess and mitigate as low as required when performing heavy manual works or working in unfavourable conditions.
    • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
    • Understand your own role and that of others in the team and work together to achieve team goals.
    • Appreciate shared team goals and work with others to achieve Departmental aims.
    • Understand how your department is structured, where you fit in, and your role in delivering business results.
    • Set an example by working efficiently with as little supervision as possible.
    • Operate a variety of motorised and hand tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.
    • Meet schedules and timelines.
    • Able to efficiently use motorised and hand tools and equipment used in maintaining, repairing facilities particular to work area.
    • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
    • Willingly accept responsibility for your own work while keeping other people informed of progress and possible problems.
    • Understand the relevant UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations depending on work area.
    • Take opportunities to develop yourself by learning from others and taking on new challenges.
