Master the Art of Donor-Facing Communication

Resource mobilisation roles live and die by your ability to speak the language of funders and partners. Hiring managers will probe how you've translated institutional needs into compelling proposals and how you've maintained relationships under pressure.

    1. Showcase your partnership track record: On your CV, quantify the partnerships you've built or funding you've secured. For example, mention the number of donors engaged or the total grant value you helped bring in. Be specific about the sectors you've worked with—government, NGOs, or corporate.

    2. Prepare a portfolio of your proposals: Bring samples of successful funding proposals or grant applications you've written. Highlight how you tailored each to the donor's priorities and how you measured impact. If you don't have samples, create a mock proposal for a real project at Zetech University to demonstrate your skills.

    3. Understand the donor landscape in Kenya: Research major development partners active in education, such as USAID, DFID, or local foundations. Be ready to discuss trends in education funding and how you would position Zetech to tap into those opportunities.

    4. Demonstrate your networking ability: Expect questions about how you've built and maintained relationships with diverse stakeholders. Share examples of events you've organized or committees you've served on. Highlight your ability to represent an institution at high-level meetings.

    5. Show financial acumen: Resource mobilisation involves budgeting and reporting on fund utilisation. Be prepared to discuss how you've managed budgets, tracked expenditures, and reported to donors. Mention any experience with financial reporting tools or software.

    6. Align with the university's mission: Understand Zetech University's strategic goals and academic programs. In your application and interview, connect your resource mobilisation ideas to their specific needs, such as funding for research, scholarships, or infrastructure.

    7. Prepare for competency-based questions: You'll likely face questions like 'Tell me about a time you secured a major donation' or 'How do you handle rejection from a funder?' Use the STAR method to structure your answers, focusing on your role and the outcome.

    8. Show your commitment to professional growth: Since the job requires a professional qualification and membership in a professional body, highlight any certifications or memberships you hold, such as in fundraising or project management. If you're not yet a member, express your willingness to join relevant bodies like the Kenya Association of Fundraising Professionals.
