Show Your Vouching Precision and Reconciliation Grip

Hiring managers for accounts assistant roles in universities look for proof that you can keep ledgers clean under pressure. They want to see that you understand internal controls and can handle cash reconciliations without missing a step.

    1. Lead with your CPA progress: On your CV, place your CPA Part II status prominently. Mention any modules completed and how they apply to daily accounting tasks like journal posting and bank reconciliations.

    2. Quantify your reconciliation wins: If you have reconciled large volumes of transactions, state the numbers. For example, 'Reconciled 500+ weekly transactions with zero discrepancies' shows concrete impact.

    3. Highlight your voucher discipline: Describe how you ensured every payment had proper supporting documents. Mention any instances where you caught errors or prevented duplicate payments.

    4. Show your software fluency: List the accounting software you have used, such as QuickBooks, Sage, or ERP systems. If you are proficient in Excel, mention advanced functions like VLOOKUP and pivot tables.

    5. Prepare for scenario questions: Be ready to explain how you would handle a cash shortage or a missing invoice. Interviewers will probe your problem-solving and adherence to policy.

    6. Understand university finance context: Research how public universities handle budgeting and imprests. Mention your familiarity with government accounting procedures if you have any.

    7. Polish your documentation skills: Since the role involves filing and safe custody of documents, emphasize your organizational skills. Give examples of how you maintained orderly records.

    8. Communicate your teamwork: The role involves assisting the accountant and working with other departments. Share examples of how you collaborated to meet deadlines.
