Show Your Research Trajectory Before You Walk Into the Interview

This is an academic post, so the panel will be looking for evidence that you can grow into a PhD and eventually supervise students. Your application must show not just your degrees, but a clear research direction in aerospace or aeronautical engineering.

1. Map your research interests: Before you apply, write a short paragraph on your intended PhD research area. Connect it to your master's project and any publications or conference papers. This shows you are serious about the academic path.

2. Polish your CV for academia: Use a CV format that highlights education, research experience, teaching experience (if any), and publications. List your master's thesis topic and any technical skills like simulation software (e.g., MATLAB, ANSYS) or lab equipment.

3. Prepare your teaching philosophy: Even though it's a tutorial fellow role, you may be asked to teach undergraduate labs or tutorials. Think about how you would explain complex concepts simply and how you would engage students.

4. Get your documents in order: Have certified copies of your certificates and transcripts ready. Ensure your referees are aware and can provide strong recommendations. One referee must be from your most recent employment.

5. Know the university's focus: JKUAT is known for engineering and technology. Familiarize yourself with their mechanical engineering department and any aerospace programs or labs. Mention how you can contribute to their research goals.

6. Practice technical questions: Expect questions on aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, and structural analysis. Review core concepts and be ready to solve problems on the spot.

7. Show your professional registration: If you are registered with a professional body like the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) or the Kenya Engineering Registration Board, highlight that. It adds credibility.

8. Follow the application instructions exactly: Address the envelope and letter to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, include the reference number, and send the soft copy in PDF to the given email. Missing any detail could disqualify you.
