Lead IT Operations With Confidence: What Hiring Managers Look For

This Assistant IT Manager role sits at the intersection of technical execution and team coordination. Hiring managers want someone who can keep systems running while also thinking ahead about security, budgets, and process improvements.

    1. Showcase your hands-on technical skills: On your CV, list specific technologies you've worked with — operating systems, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), networking tools, and cybersecurity measures. Use concrete examples like 'migrated 50 users to Office 365' or 'reduced downtime by 20% through proactive monitoring.'

    2. Prove your leadership potential: Even if you haven't managed a team, highlight times you led a project, trained colleagues, or coordinated with vendors. Describe how you delegated tasks or resolved conflicts. Managers want to see you can step up.

    3. Prepare for scenario-based interview questions: Expect questions like 'How would you handle a network outage during peak hours?' or 'Describe a time you improved an IT process.' Practice the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.

    4. Emphasize your understanding of ITIL and project management: If you have ITIL or PMP certification, mention it. If not, show you know frameworks like incident management, change management, and how to run small projects — e.g., rolling out new software across departments.

    5. Demonstrate cybersecurity awareness: Talk about firewalls, antivirus, data backups, and security policies. Give an example of how you identified a vulnerability or helped enforce security protocols. This is a key concern for retail/FMCG companies handling customer data.

    6. Highlight vendor management experience: Mention any experience negotiating with suppliers, evaluating software, or managing service-level agreements. This shows you can handle procurement and keep costs in check.

    7. Show you stay current with tech trends: Mention blogs, courses, or certifications you pursue. For example, 'I recently completed a course on cloud security' or 'I follow industry news on emerging threats.' It signals you'll bring fresh ideas.

    8. Prepare a 30-60-90 day plan: Outline how you'd assess the current IT setup, address immediate issues, and then implement improvements. This demonstrates strategic thinking and readiness to contribute from day one.
