Master the Art of Selling Heavy Equipment Utilization

This role is about more than closing deals—it's about convincing contractors and project owners that your machinery is the key to their project's success. Hiring managers will look for proof that you understand the financial and operational realities of construction and infrastructure projects.

    1. Quantify your past wins: On your CV, show numbers: revenue targets met, contracts signed, utilization rates improved. For example, "Increased equipment utilization by 30% within a year" is far more compelling than "responsible for sales."

    2. Show you know the market: Be ready to discuss Kenya's major infrastructure projects, key contractors, and the current state of the heavy equipment leasing market. Mention specific counties or regions you've worked in.

    3. Highlight your network: If you have relationships with contractors, developers, or project managers, list them (without breaching confidentiality). Hiring managers want to see that you can open doors.

    4. Prepare a 90-day plan: Outline how you would approach the first three months: which regions to target, which clients to prioritize, and how you'd build a pipeline. This shows strategic thinking.

    5. Demonstrate commercial acumen: Be ready to discuss pricing strategies, contract negotiation, and how you've handled objections in the past. Use specific examples.

    6. Show resilience: Sales in heavy machinery involves long sales cycles and tough negotiations. Share a story of a difficult deal you persisted on and eventually closed.

    7. Understand the technical side: While you're not an engineer, you should be comfortable discussing equipment specifications, maintenance, and operational costs. This builds credibility.

    8. Communicate your travel readiness: The role involves regular travel to project sites. Emphasize your flexibility and any experience working in remote or challenging environments.
