    Job Description

Our Client is an established provider of Integrated Electronic Security Systems surveillance, access control, fire detection, building management, visitor and parking management, and related solutions with a strong client base across government, financial, and commercial sectors in Kenya and the region. The Business Development Manager will build and sustain relationships with consultants, quantity surveyors, architects, project owners/developers, and security managers, with the objective of creating early, consistent visibility and preference within projects that are under construction or in the pipeline. This is a relationship-first, network-driven role.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with consultants, quantity surveyors, architects, project owners, developers, and security managers within the built-environment and infrastructure ecosystem.
    • Proactively map and track projects under construction or in the pipeline, engaging relevant stakeholders early in the project lifecycle.
    • Represent USS at industry events, professional association forums, site visits, and networking functions to build brand visibility and credibility.
    • Position the Client as a trusted, capable partner for electronic security and safety systems to key influencers and decision-makers.
    • Generate and qualify leads, then hand them off cleanly to the presales team for quotation and the design team for solution development.
    • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date record of relationships, engagements, and opportunities in the CRM.
    • Feed market intelligence back to management competitor activity, upcoming tenders, industry trends, and project pipeline movement.
    • Work collaboratively with the presales and design teams to ensure a smooth internal handoff once an opportunity is identified.
    • Own delivery against a mutually agreed sales/business development target.
    • Update the CRM system on a periodic basis with relationships, engagements, and opportunity status this record will form the basis of periodic review meetings and discussions.
    • This role is intentionally scoped around relationship-building and pipeline sourcing, not technical or commercial execution: Quotation and pricing — owned by the presales team. Technical solution design — owned by the design team.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or a related field.
    • A minimum of 3–5 years of proven B2B business development or relationship management experience, ideally within construction, built environment, security, or ICT-related industries.
    • An existing professional network among consultants, architects, quantity surveyors, or project owners is highly desirable.
    • Strong track record of relationship-building and networking at a senior/professional level.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
    • Self-driven and comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy and accountability.
    • Comfortable engaging confidently with architects, consultants, project owners, and senior stakeholders.
    • Added Advantage: Prior experience working within the ELV Extra Low Voltage or electronic security domain will be considered a strong added advantage.
    • Product and technical training provided on onboarding — no prior security-systems product knowledge required.
    • Support from dedicated presales and design teams, allowing full focus on relationship-building and pipeline generation.
    • A high-profile, high-autonomy role representing an established, reputable brand within its industry.

Network Like a Pro: Building Trust with Architects and Consultants

This role lives and dies by your relationships. Hiring managers will probe how you've cultivated senior-level contacts and turned them into pipeline opportunities. Show them you understand the built-environment ecosystem and can navigate it with confidence.

    1. Map your network: Before applying, list your existing contacts among consultants, architects, quantity surveyors, or project owners. Quantify the strength of these relationships and be ready to share specific examples of how you've leveraged them for business development.

    2. Speak their language: Familiarize yourself with the project lifecycle in construction—from design to handover. Understand where electronic security systems fit in and how you can position yourself as a valuable partner early on.

    3. Show your CRM discipline: Highlight your systematic approach to tracking relationships and opportunities. Mention specific CRM tools you've used and how you've used data to drive your sales strategy.

    4. Prepare for stakeholder scenarios: Expect interview questions like 'How would you approach a consultant to introduce our solutions?' Practice concise, value-driven pitches that address their pain points and project goals.

    5. Demonstrate autonomy: This role requires self-direction. Share examples where you've worked independently to achieve targets, manage your schedule, and make strategic decisions without close supervision.

    6. Research the industry: Stay updated on trends in electronic security, ELV systems, and smart buildings. Being knowledgeable about industry challenges and innovations will set you apart.

    7. Highlight your communication skills: As a bridge between technical teams and clients, your ability to translate complex concepts into clear value propositions is key. Prepare to showcase your presentation and negotiation skills.

    8. Show passion for the built environment: Express genuine interest in construction, infrastructure, and security solutions. Hiring managers look for candidates who are not just salespeople but true enthusiasts of the field.
