    Position Overview

    • The Civil Engineer will be responsible for the planning, coordination, supervision and technical execution of civil and infrastructure works at Magnate City, ensuring that construction activities are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, statutory requirements, quality standards, budgets and project timelines.
    • The role will provide day-to-day technical oversight of site activities, including earthworks, roads, drainage, water and sewer infrastructure, structural works, utilities and associated external works, while coordinating contractors, consultants, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
    • The Civil Engineer will also monitor quantities, workmanship, material utilisation, project progress, variations, defects and compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day civil and infrastructure works at Magnate City.
    • Ensure construction is undertaken in accordance with approved architectural, structural and civil drawings, specifications, Bills of Quantities (BQ), method statements and applicable standards.
    • Supervise earthworks, excavation and filling; roads, pavements, kerbs and parking areas; storm-water drainage; water reticulation and sewer systems; foundations and reinforced concrete works; structural and masonry works; utility ducts; landscaping-related civil works and other external works.
    • Conduct regular site inspections and identify workmanship, quality or technical deficiencies requiring corrective action.
    • Verify setting-out, levels, dimensions and coordinates before and during construction.
    • Monitor contractor performance against approved work programmes and project milestones.
    • Review civil and structural drawings, specifications and technical documents before execution and identify discrepancies or constructability concerns.
    • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, MEP consultants, contractors and other specialists to resolve technical and site coordination issues.
    • Participate in site meetings, technical meetings and project progress reviews.
    • Prepare and/or review method statements, technical submissions, Requests for Information (RFIs), inspection requests and material approvals.
    • Ensure all revisions to drawings and specifications are properly communicated and implemented on site.
    • Maintain accurate as-built information and support preparation of final as-built drawings and project handover documentation.
    • Ensure materials delivered to site comply with approved specifications and quality requirements.
    • Coordinate and witness relevant field and laboratory tests, including concrete, soil compaction, aggregate and other construction-material testing.
    • Inspect works before subsequent activities proceed and ensure defective or non-conforming work is rectified.
    • Maintain appropriate inspection, testing and quality-control records.
    • Monitor snagging and defects and ensure closure before handover.
    • Monitor actual construction progress against approved programmes and milestones.
    • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly progress reports, including photographs, completed works, outstanding works, constraints and corrective actions.
    • Identify potential delays, technical risks and construction bottlenecks and recommend mitigation measures.
    • Track contractor resources, including labour, equipment and materials, against planned requirements.
    • Support preparation and review of construction schedules and short-term work programmes.
    • Escalate significant delays, defects, cost implications or technical risks to management promptly.
    • Work closely with the Quantity Surveyor/Project Manager to monitor project costs against approved budgets.
    • Verify quantities and measurements of completed civil works for purposes of contractor valuation and certification.
    • Review requests for variations and provide technical justification before approval.
    • Monitor material utilisation and minimise wastage, loss and unnecessary rework.
    • Verify materials required against drawings, BQs and construction programmes before requisition.
    • Support procurement by preparing or reviewing technical specifications and evaluating the technical suitability of proposed materials and suppliers.
    • Coordinate civil contractors and subcontractors and monitor compliance with contractual and technical requirements.
    • Provide technical direction and clarification to site teams where required.
    • Monitor contractor productivity, workmanship, staffing and equipment deployment.
    • Liaise with consultants, authorities, utility providers and other stakeholders on technical matters affecting the project.
    • Participate in contractor performance evaluations.
    • Maintain professional working relationships while ensuring contractors remain accountable for quality, cost, safety and timelines.
    • Ensure civil works comply with applicable occupational health, safety and environmental requirements.
    • Work closely with the Health & Safety team to identify and control construction-related hazards.
    • Ensure contractors implement approved safety procedures, method statements and risk assessments.
    • Stop or escalate unsafe or materially non-compliant works where necessary.
    • Support compliance with relevant permits, approvals, building regulations, environmental requirements and applicable Kenyan construction standards.
    • Ensure required inspections and approvals are obtained from relevant authorities at the appropriate project stages.
    • Maintain comprehensive site records, including drawings, inspection reports, test results, site instructions, RFIs, progress reports and correspondence.
    • Maintain records of changes and variations arising during construction.
    • Participate in practical completion inspections, snagging and defects-liability inspections.
    • Ensure all identified defects are properly documented, assigned and closed.
    • Support compilation of the project's technical handover documentation, including as-built drawings, test certificates and relevant approvals.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised university.
    • Registered as a Graduate Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) or otherwise appropriately registered in accordance with applicable Kenyan requirements.
    • Minimum 5 years' relevant post-graduate experience in civil engineering and construction/site supervision.
    • Demonstrable experience in residential, commercial, mixed-use or infrastructure development projects.
    • Strong knowledge of construction methods, civil works, structural drawings, specifications and quality-control procedures.
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant engineering/project software.
    • Ability to interpret architectural, structural, civil and services drawings.
    • Working knowledge of Bills of Quantities, construction programmes, contractor valuations and variation management.
    • Good understanding of applicable Kenyan construction, safety and regulatory requirements.
    • Professional Engineer registration with EBK.
    • Membership in the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).
    • Experience in large-scale real-estate or mixed-use development projects.
    • Experience with Civil 3D, MS Project, Primavera or similar project-management/design applications.
    • Site supervision and civil construction management.
    • Roads, drainage, sewer, water and external infrastructure works.
    • Concrete, structural and foundation works.
    • Setting-out and interpretation of engineering drawings.
