Prove Your Defensive Driving and Maintenance Know-How
This role is about more than just moving a vehicle from A to B. The polytechnic wants a driver who can keep a vehicle roadworthy, keep records straight, and stay calm under pressure. Your application should show that you treat driving as a professional craft, not a casual errand.
1. Show your certificates clearly: Your KCSE certificate, driving license classes (B3, C1, D1, D2, D3), Occupational Trade Test Grade III, Defensive Driving, and First Aid certificates must be visible in your application. Scan them clearly and label each one. If any are missing, say when you plan to get them.
2. Detail your driving experience: List every driving job you've had, with the dates, vehicle types, and your main duties. If you've driven for a public institution or corporate, highlight that. Use numbers: how many years, how many kilometres per week, what kind of routes.
3. Talk about vehicle maintenance: Mention specific checks you do daily: oil, tyre pressure, brakes, coolant. Give an example of a time you spotted a problem before it became a breakdown. This shows you're proactive, not just reactive.
4. Prepare for a practical test: The polytechnic may test your driving skills. Practice reversing, parking, and handling a manual gearbox. Also be ready to explain how you would handle a tyre blowout or a passenger emergency.
5. Emphasise your clean record: A clean driving record is non-negotiable. If you have any endorsements, be upfront and explain what happened. If you have none, say so clearly. Honesty matters more than a perfect past.
6. Show you know the roads: Embu and the surrounding areas have varied terrain. Mention that you know the routes to Nairobi, Meru, and other towns. Talk about how you plan routes to avoid traffic and save fuel.
7. Highlight your people skills: You'll be transporting passengers, possibly students or staff. Give an example of how you've helped a passenger with luggage or special needs. This shows you understand the service side of the job.
8. Keep your documents organised: The application requires hard copies. Put them in a neat folder with a cover letter that summarises your experience. Double-check that all certificates are included and legible. A tidy application reflects a tidy work ethic.
