This Head of Marketing role is a hands-on leadership position, owning the full marketing mandate across Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, and South Africa. You will be responsible for advancing the "More Than a Phone" proposition, shaping marketing structure across markets, and building the marketing function for M-KOPA's next phase of growth. This involves core strategic thinking, developing brand strategy, reading local markets, interrogating data and consumer insights, writing briefs, evaluating creative, optimising media mix, and building business cases for investment.
Key Responsibilities
Own the full marketing mandate including brand strategy, creative direction, campaign execution, and marketing talent development across Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, and South Africa.
Advance the "More Than a Phone" proposition.
Partner with Country GMs to shape marketing structure and governance across markets.
Build the marketing function to power M-KOPA's next phase of growth.
Develop brand strategy, read local markets, interrogate data and consumer insights, write briefs, evaluate creative, optimize media mix, and build business cases for investment.
Manage CI guidelines, value proposition framework, and brand architecture across devices and digital product categories.
Oversee positioning, selling points, and campaign direction for hardware and digital product launches across markets.
Manage device packaging end-to-end, ensuring reflection of brand identity and meeting retail, agent, and customer requirements.
Direct ATL, BTL, in-trade, and digital campaign execution (TV, radio, OOH, digital, experiential) across five markets.
Manage performance marketing, CPA targeting, content and video, website strategy and optimisation.
Oversee group agency relationships, including briefing, performance reviews, and contract oversight.
Implement and manage brand measurement frameworks (sentiment, awareness, recall, consideration) with OKRs and survey baselines.
Required Qualifications
Strategic brand thinker capable of translating complex business positioning into creative, market-relevant narratives.
Curious and culturally attuned, with deep interest in African consumer behaviour.
Ability to lead with influence, holding the line on brand while partnering collaboratively across functions and markets.
10+ years in marketing, with 5+ in a senior group, regional, or multi-market leadership role.
Proven track record building and evolving brand strategy in high-growth fintech, consumer services, or creative agency environments.
Hands-on ownership of multi-market budgets with direct accountability for spend performance.
Deep experience in M-KOPA's core markets.
Strong ATL campaign craft, including directing agency partners and overseeing integrated media plans.
Hands-on performance marketing credentials: funnel optimisation, data-driven acquisition, paid social across platforms like Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp.
Proven people leader with experience developing marketing talent across geographies.
Commercially fluent, comfortable with budgeting, managing marketing investment, and understanding its contribution to the full proposition economics.
