Show Your Design Process, Not Just Pretty Pictures

Hiring managers for interior design roles want to see how you think, not just your final renders. They'll probe how you translate a client brief into a functional layout, how you handle budget constraints, and how you coordinate with contractors on site.

    1. Curate your portfolio for this role: Include 4-6 projects that show a range of styles and scales, especially any residential, commercial, or hospitality work. For each project, add a short caption explaining the client brief, your design concept, and the outcome. Avoid dumping every project you've ever done—select the ones that align with the job's focus.

    2. Master the software stack: This role demands AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite. If you're weak in any of these, take a quick online course to refresh. Be ready to talk about how you use each tool in your workflow, from concept sketching to construction documents.

    3. Prepare a project management story: You'll manage multiple projects simultaneously. Think of a time you juggled deadlines, budgets, and client changes. Quantify the results—like delivering a project under budget or ahead of schedule. This shows you're not just creative but also reliable.

    4. Brush up on sustainable design: The posting mentions sustainable and environmentally conscious design. Be ready to discuss materials you've specified that are eco-friendly, or how you reduce waste in your designs. Even if you haven't done a fully green project, show you understand the principles.

    5. Know your building codes: You'll need to ensure designs comply with regulations. Review local Kenyan building codes and accessibility standards. Mentioning specific codes in the interview shows you're serious about compliance.

    6. Practice your client consultation pitch: You'll conduct client consultations to understand vision and style. Prepare a few questions you'd ask a client to uncover their needs, and practice active listening. This demonstrates your communication skills.

    7. Highlight your vendor negotiation skills: The role includes budgeting, procurement, and vendor negotiation. Share an example where you sourced materials at a good price or negotiated with a supplier to stay within budget. This proves you can manage costs.

    8. Show your 3D visualization flair: Familiarity with 3ds Max, Lumion, or Enscape is a plus. If you have experience, include a few high-quality renders in your portfolio. If not, consider learning the basics to stand out.
