Show Your Portfolio's Teaching Impact
For a lecturer role, hiring panels want to see not just your design skills but how you communicate them. Your portfolio should demonstrate both your craft and your ability to explain design decisions.
1. Curate for teaching: Select portfolio pieces that show a range of skills—from branding to digital product design. For each, be ready to explain the process and the rationale behind your choices, as if teaching a class.
2. Highlight student work: If you have mentored or taught before, include examples of student projects and their outcomes. This proves you can translate your knowledge to others.
3. Master the tools: Be prepared to demonstrate your proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch during the interview. Have a live or recorded walkthrough of a project ready.
4. Connect to industry: Show how your design work has solved real-world problems. Mention any client work or freelance projects that align with the digital media industry in Africa.
5. Prepare a mini-lesson: You may be asked to deliver a short teaching demo. Prepare a 10-minute lesson on a web design topic, using your portfolio as the basis.
6. Know the curriculum: Research common web design and development curricula. Be ready to discuss how you would structure a course, from basics to advanced topics.
7. Emphasize soft skills: Lecturers need patience, clarity, and the ability to motivate. Share examples of how you've helped others learn or overcome challenges.
8. Show passion for Africa's digital future: This role is about shaping the next generation. Express genuine enthusiasm for developing local talent and contributing to the digital economy.
