Show Your Lab Discipline and Teaching Readiness

This role blends lab expertise with trainee supervision, so hiring managers will look for both technical precision and the ability to guide learners safely. Your application should prove you can handle specimens, maintain equipment, and enforce protocols without cutting corners.

    1. Lead with your KMLTTB registration: Make your valid registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board the first thing on your CV. Hiring panels for this post check that credential before anything else, so place it prominently under your name and in your professional summary.

    2. Detail your lab safety experience: Describe specific instances where you enforced biosafety or infection-control measures, such as handling hazardous samples or managing spills. Mention any training you've completed in lab safety or quality assurance to back up your claims.

    3. Show your equipment maintenance skills: List the types of laboratory equipment you've calibrated or maintained, like microscopes, centrifuges, or analyzers. If you have a logbook or records of maintenance, mention that to demonstrate your attention to detail.

    4. Highlight your teaching or supervision experience: Even if it was informal, any experience guiding students, interns, or junior staff in a lab setting is valuable. Describe how you explained procedures or assessed practical skills, as this role requires trainee supervision.

    5. Prepare for competency-based questions: Since the role supports CBET assessment, expect questions on how you would evaluate a trainee's practical skills. Think of examples where you gave feedback or helped someone improve their technique.

    6. Emphasize your record-keeping accuracy: Lab work demands meticulous logs, so highlight your experience with inventory, quality-control logs, or patient records. Mention any software you've used for lab data management to show computer literacy.

    7. Align with the institution's values: The polytechnic is an equal opportunity employer and values integrity. In your cover letter, express your commitment to ethical practice and your willingness to undergo the required clearance checks, showing you're ready to meet Chapter Six requirements.

    8. Polish your communication skills: Since you'll guide trainees, demonstrate your ability to explain complex lab concepts clearly. Prepare a brief example of how you would walk a trainee through a testing procedure, emphasizing safety and accuracy.
