Master the Metrics Behind the Pizza Dough

This role isn't just about keeping the restaurant running—it's about using data to make it run better. Hiring managers will want to see that you can turn numbers into actionable improvements, not just file reports.

    1. Show your spreadsheet muscle: Be ready to demonstrate your proficiency with Excel or Google Sheets. Prepare a sample inventory tracking sheet or a simple dashboard you've built in a previous role. Highlight any formulas or pivot tables you've used to analyze operational data.

    2. Talk about vendor relationships: In restaurant operations, supplier communication is key. Share a specific example where you negotiated a better price, resolved a delivery issue, or improved communication with a vendor. Emphasize your professionalism and follow-through.

    3. Prepare for scenario questions: Expect questions like 'How would you handle a sudden shortage of ingredients?' or 'How do you prioritize tasks during a busy service?' Think through your process for staying calm and organized under pressure.

    4. Highlight your hospitality experience: Even if your background isn't in restaurants, any customer-facing or fast-paced retail experience is relevant. Connect your past roles to the demands of this position—managing multiple tasks, dealing with people, and keeping things running smoothly.

    5. Understand the restaurant's concept: Since it's a Neapolitan pizza place with a bar, show you understand the casual dining atmosphere. Mention your familiarity with food service trends or your passion for great food. This shows you're genuinely interested in the business.

    6. Bring your own process ideas: Come to the interview with a few suggestions for improving operational efficiency. For example, you might propose a digital checklist for opening and closing duties, or a system for tracking inventory levels. This shows initiative and forward-thinking.

    7. Emphasize your communication skills: You'll be the bridge between front-of-house, back-of-house, and management. Give examples of how you've effectively communicated with different teams, resolved conflicts, or kept everyone informed. Clear, concise communication is crucial.

    8. Be ready to discuss your long-term fit: This is a contractor role, but they're building a new restaurant. Show that you're invested in the success of the operation and open to growing with the company. Talk about your career goals and how this role fits into them.
