Show You Can Sell Into Construction's Decision Chain

This role lives at the intersection of sales and construction. Hiring managers want proof you can navigate contractors, developers, and architects — not just push product. Your CV and interview answers need to show you understand their buying cycles and can build trust across a long sales process.

    1. Map your sales wins to construction: If you have sold construction materials or similar B2B products, quantify your achievements. For example, "Increased sales by 30% in 12 months by targeting mid-sized developers." If you lack direct construction experience, highlight transferable skills like managing long sales cycles or selling technical products.

    2. Prove you know the players: Research the key stakeholders in Nairobi's construction and real estate scene. Mention specific types of projects (e.g., residential towers, commercial complexes) and how you would approach each. Show you understand the roles of contractors, architects, and interior designers in specifying appliances.

    3. Prepare a 90-day plan: Outline how you would start: which accounts to target, how to leverage existing networks, and what sales activities you would prioritize. This demonstrates strategic thinking and initiative.

    4. Show your network: If you have contacts in construction, real estate, or interior design, mention them. Hiring managers value candidates who can open doors immediately. Be ready to discuss how you would leverage these relationships.

    5. Highlight your target-hitting record: Provide specific examples of meeting or exceeding sales targets. Use numbers: revenue brought in, percentage growth, or market share gained. This is non-negotiable for a senior sales role.

    6. Demonstrate product knowledge: Even if you haven't sold kitchen appliances, show you understand the product category. Research popular brands, features, and trends. Be ready to discuss how you would position these products to construction clients.

    7. Prepare for behavioral questions: Expect questions about handling rejection, negotiating contracts, and managing multiple stakeholders. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers with concrete examples.

    8. Polish your CV for a sales audience: Use action verbs like "generated," "negotiated," "exceeded." Keep it to two pages, and tailor it to highlight sales achievements over job duties. Include a professional summary that positions you as a results-driven sales professional with construction sector insight.
