Master the Art of the SME Credit Conversation

This role is a hunter's game: 80% direct sales, with a sharp eye on credit quality. Hiring managers will probe how you balance aggressive revenue targets with disciplined risk management, so be ready to show both your sales wins and your portfolio health.

    1. Quantify your hunter wins: Bring numbers to the interview: how many new SME clients you onboarded, the value of assets you grew, and how you hit income targets. Concrete figures beat vague claims like 'I grew my portfolio'.

    2. Show your credit analysis muscle: Be ready to walk through a real credit assessment you've done: how you read financial statements, spotted red flags, and structured a deal that stayed within risk limits. Bring a sanitized example if you can.

    3. Prove you know the Kenyan SME landscape: Talk about specific sectors you've worked with, the challenges SMEs face (cash flow, collateral, informal records), and how you've adapted your approach. Local insight is a differentiator.

    4. Prepare for stakeholder role-play: Expect questions on how you influence internal credit committees, negotiate with demanding clients, and manage conflict. Practice a concise story that shows your emotional intelligence in action.

    5. Highlight trade finance and project finance exposure: If you have any experience with structured trade finance, syndication, or project financing, lead with it. This is a highly preferred skill that sets you apart.

    6. Show your adaptability across hubs: The role covers Nairobi and Kitengela, so demonstrate flexibility and a plan for managing a split territory. Mention any experience working across different business environments.

    7. Polish your presentation skills: You'll be articulating the bank's ambitions to various stakeholders, so prepare a crisp, confident pitch. Practice presenting a complex idea in under two minutes.

    8. Bring a 90-day plan: Show you're ready to hit the ground running: how you'll map your territory, identify target sectors, and start building a pipeline from day one. This signals initiative and strategic thinking.
