Master the Theatre: What Isiolo's Hiring Panel Will Probe

This is a hands-on surgical role in a county hospital, so the panel will be checking for more than your MMed certificate. They want to see that you can run a theatre, handle emergencies, and mentor junior staff in a resource-constrained setting.

    1. Show your emergency surgery readiness: Be ready to describe specific emergency cases you've managed, like trauma laparotomies or acute obstetrics. Mention how you prioritized under pressure and what outcomes you achieved.

    2. Highlight your mentorship experience: The job explicitly asks you to supervise interns and medical officers. Prepare examples of how you've taught procedures, given feedback, or helped juniors improve their surgical skills.

    3. Prove your infection control know-how: Since you'll oversee infection control in theatre, expect questions on sterilization protocols, antibiotic stewardship, and how you'd reduce surgical site infections. Have concrete protocols you've implemented.

    4. Bring your KMPDC paperwork in order: Your application must include certified copies of your MMed, KMPDC recognition, and current practicing license. Double-check that all documents are certified and up-to-date before submission.

    5. Prepare for county-specific questions: Isiolo is a semi-arid county with unique challenges like nomadic populations and limited resources. Think about how you'd adapt surgical services to these realities, such as outreach clinics or mobile theatre.

    6. Show your teamwork and communication: You'll work with theatre nurses, anesthetists, and other specialists. Give examples of how you've collaborated in a multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes.

    7. Discuss your experience with referrals: The role involves handling referrals from lower-level facilities. Talk about how you've triaged and managed referrals, ensuring timely and appropriate care.

    8. Be ready for a practical scenario: The panel might give you a clinical case to walk through, like a complicated hernia or a bowel obstruction. Practice explaining your decision-making process clearly and systematically.
