Master the Public Procurement Act Before You Apply
This role sits inside Kenya's public sector, so the hiring panel will be looking for someone who already understands the legal backbone of government procurement. Your CV and interview answers need to show you can operate within the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, not just general supply chain theory.
1. Show your grasp of the PPADA: Mention specific sections or principles from the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015 in your CV and cover letter. If you've handled tenders or disposal processes before, describe what you did and the outcome.
2. Prove your computer skills: The job requires proficiency in computer applications. List the specific tools you know—Excel, ERP systems, or procurement software—and give an example of how you used them to manage stock or process invoices.
3. Highlight your inventory control experience: Even if you're entry-level, any coursework or internship where you tracked stock, updated cards, or monitored re-order levels counts. Quantify it if you can: 'managed inventory of 500+ items' is stronger than 'handled stock'.
4. Prepare for scenario questions on risk and ethics: The role involves identifying risks and fostering ethical practices. Think of a time you spotted a risk in a process and what you did about it. Be ready to talk about how you'd handle a conflict of interest or a supplier pressure situation.
5. Understand the value-for-money angle: Market surveys and value-for-money assessments are core duties. Be ready to explain how you'd compare suppliers, evaluate quotes, and ensure the agency gets the best deal without compromising quality.
6. Familiarize yourself with government structures: This is a government agency, so committees, charters, and business continuity plans are part of the daily language. Read up on how Kenyan government departments are organized and what a department charter typically contains.
7. Polish your documentation skills: You'll be preparing local purchase orders, service orders, and committee documents. Show that you're meticulous with paperwork—mention any experience with official documents, filing systems, or audit trails.
8. Practice explaining complex regulations simply: As an officer, you'll need to implement the Act and other regulations. In the interview, they may ask you to explain a procurement rule to a non-expert. Practice breaking down legal jargon into plain language.
