Master the Art of Service Recovery

In this role, you'll be the face of the dining experience, and how you handle tough moments matters as much as how you deliver a plate. Hiring managers for this post look for servers who can keep their cool, read the room, and turn a complaint into a compliment.

    1. Show your service recovery skills: Be ready to share a story where you turned an unhappy customer into a happy one. Practice describing the situation, your action, and the result in under two minutes.

    2. Highlight your food safety knowledge: Even if you haven't been formally certified, mention any training you've had in food handling, sanitation, or hygiene. If you have a Food Safety certificate, put it on your CV.

    3. Emphasize your speed and accuracy: In a fast-paced restaurant, taking orders correctly and delivering them quickly is key. Give an example of a busy shift where you kept your accuracy high.

    4. Prepare for situational questions: Expect questions like 'What would you do if a customer complains about their meal?' Think through your answer using the LATTE method: Listen, Acknowledge, Take action, Thank, and Explain.

    5. Show you're a team player: Restaurants run on teamwork. Talk about a time you helped a colleague during a rush or covered for someone on break.

    6. Polish your communication style: You'll need to speak clearly with customers and relay orders to the kitchen. Practice speaking concisely and confidently in your interview.

    7. Be ready to talk about travel readiness: Since this role requires a valid passport and international travel, mention your passport status and any visa experience you have. Show you're flexible and ready to go where the job takes you.

    8. Dress for the role: For a waiter position, neat, professional attire is a must. It shows you understand the standards of the job and respect the employer.

CareerSasa Safety Alert: Never pay employers or agencies for interviews, training, or job placement. Does a job request payment? Report it immediately using the "Flag" button. While CareerSasa vets job postings thoroughly, always verify opportunities independently.
