Show You Can Run an Apiary Like a Business

This role is about more than keeping bees alive — it's about running a commercial operation with targets, records, and a team to manage. Hiring managers will look for proof you've done this before, not just passion for bees.

    1. Quantify your apiary experience: On your CV, list the number of hives you've managed, honey yields per hive, and any production targets you've met. Numbers like "managed 500 hives producing 10 tonnes annually" speak louder than generic statements.

    2. Prepare for technical questions: Expect deep dives into colony health, pest control (like Varroa mites), and post-harvest handling. Review best practices and be ready to give specific examples of how you've handled disease outbreaks or quality issues.

    3. Highlight your team leadership: This role supervises field teams, so emphasize your experience training and coordinating workers. Give an example of a time you improved team productivity or solved a staffing challenge.

    4. Show your record-keeping skills: Bring samples of reports or logs you've maintained — production records, hive inspection sheets, or inventory lists. This proves you can handle the administrative side of the job.

    5. Understand the local context: Isiolo is a semi-arid region, so be ready to discuss how you'd manage bees in harsh conditions, including water access, forage availability, and seasonal variations.

    6. Emphasize sustainability: The job mentions modern and sustainable practices. Talk about how you've implemented sustainable methods, like integrated pest management or organic certification, in past roles.

    7. Prepare for field-based questions: Since the role requires working in remote locations, expect questions about your willingness to travel and live in rural areas. Show that you're comfortable with that lifestyle.

    8. Ask smart questions: In your interview, ask about the scale of operations, current challenges in the apiary, and what success looks like in the first year. This shows you're thinking strategically about the role.
