Master the AML/CFT Screen: What Hiring Managers Probe

This role sits at the heart of the bank's defense against financial crime, so expect to be grilled on your hands-on experience with transaction monitoring and regulatory reporting. They want someone who can spot red flags and act decisively, not just recite policy.

    1. Show your transaction monitoring toolkit: Be ready to walk through specific cases you've handled, the systems you used, and how you escalated suspicious activity. Mention any experience with FRC/goAML, CTR, or STR/SAR filings—concrete examples beat generic claims.

    2. Prove your KYC/CDD/EDD depth: Hiring managers will probe your understanding of customer due diligence at different risk levels. Prepare to explain how you've applied enhanced due diligence for high-risk customers, including PEPs and sanctions screening.

    3. Know Kenya's regulatory landscape cold: Brush up on the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, the Banking Act, and Central Bank of Kenya regulations. Show you understand how these shape daily compliance work.

    4. Highlight your investigative instincts: Compliance roles need people who can connect dots. Share examples of how you've investigated alerts, identified patterns, and documented findings for regulatory submission.

    5. Bring your certification edge: If you hold CAMS, ACAMS, CPA, or ACCA, make it prominent on your CV and be ready to discuss how it sharpened your compliance skills. Even if not, show your commitment to continuous learning.

    6. Prepare for scenario questions: Expect hypotheticals like 'What would you do if you spot a suspicious transaction?' Practice a structured response: assess, investigate, document, escalate, and report.

    7. Emphasize integrity and discretion: This role handles sensitive data, so demonstrate your ability to maintain confidentiality and act with high ethical standards. Share examples where you've handled sensitive information responsibly.

    8. Ask smart questions: Show genuine interest by asking about the bank's current AML systems, team structure, and recent regulatory changes they're navigating. It signals you're thinking long-term about the role.
