Own the Compliance Lifecycle: From Policy to Practice
Compliance roles at global nonprofits demand more than knowing the rules—they need someone who can translate them into daily operations across borders. Hiring managers will probe how you've matured programs, not just maintained them.
1. Show program-building proof: On your CV, highlight instances where you took a compliance process from scratch or significantly improved it. Use numbers: e.g., 'reduced screening turnaround by 30%' or 'implemented GDPR framework across 5 entities'.
2. Demonstrate multi-jurisdiction savvy: Be ready to discuss how you've handled entity registrations, good-standing requirements, or privacy laws in multiple countries. Mention specific frameworks like GDPR, OFAC, or UK Bribery Act if you've worked with them.
3. Prepare for scenario questions: Expect questions like 'How would you handle a data subject request from a program participant in Kenya?' or 'What steps do you take when a counterparty fails sanctions screening?' Practice structured answers.
4. Emphasize stakeholder collaboration: This role is about being a partner, not a police officer. Give examples of how you've advised Finance or HR teams on compliance without creating friction.
5. Highlight your self-starter mindset: Share a story where you took ownership of a compliance task with minimal direction and delivered results. Show that you can report outcomes, not just activities.
6. Know Water.org's mission: Understand their work in water and sanitation. Connect your compliance expertise to their global impact—why integrity matters for their partnerships and beneficiaries.
7. Brush up on data privacy: Even if it's a plus, be ready to discuss basics of data subject requests, consent management, and cross-border data transfers. This is a growing area for NGOs.
8. Ask smart questions: In your interview, ask about the compliance program's current maturity, key challenges, and how success is measured. This shows you're already thinking like a program builder.
