Show Your Courtroom Readiness and Debt Recovery Edge
Legal officers in financial institutions are judged on how quickly they turn disputes into recoveries and keep the bank out of trouble. Your application should scream that you can handle a file from demand letter to judgment without dropping a deadline.
1. Lead with your LL.B and admission status: Put your Bachelor of Laws and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya status at the top of your CV. Hiring managers scan for these before anything else, so make them impossible to miss.
2. Quantify your litigation wins: Instead of saying 'handled debt recovery cases', list the number of matters you've managed and the recovery rate you achieved. Numbers like 'recovered KES 5M in 2025' speak louder than vague claims.
3. Show your drafting muscle: Attach or mention specific legal documents you've drafted—demand letters, plaints, defences, or settlement agreements. A portfolio of clean, concise drafting is your best proof of skill.
4. Prove you know court procedures cold: Be ready to walk through a typical case timeline in an interview—from filing to hearing to judgment. Mention your familiarity with e-filing systems and court registries.
5. Highlight your microfinance or banking exposure: If you've worked with financial institutions, spell out how you handled loan recovery, statutory demands, or regulatory compliance. That experience is gold for this role.
6. Show you can manage external advocates: Talk about a time you coordinated with outside counsel or directed a case strategy. Financial institutions want someone who can keep external lawyers on track and costs down.
7. Prepare for compliance questions: Brush up on the Banking Act, Microfinance Act, and data protection rules. Interviewers will probe whether you can keep the institution compliant while pursuing recoveries.
8. Tailor your cover letter to their pain points: Mention how your litigation experience directly reduces bad debt and legal risk. A short, punchy letter that connects your skills to their bottom line will stand out.
