Show You Can Run a Site, Not Just Read Plans

Construction supervision roles live and die on your ability to translate blueprints into action, keep crews safe, and hit deadlines. Hiring managers here will be scanning for evidence that you've owned site outcomes, not just attended them.

    1. Lead with your site track record: On your CV, put your most relevant construction supervision experience at the top, with numbers: project size, crew size, budget managed, and on-time delivery. For example, 'Supervised a 20-person crew on a 3-month, KES 15M project delivered on schedule.'

    2. Prove your safety mindset: Safety is non-negotiable on any site. Highlight any safety certifications (e.g., OSHA, First Aid) and give a concrete example of a hazard you identified and mitigated. If you don't have formal certs, show how you enforce safety protocols daily.

    3. Show your scheduling muscle: Construction is a race against time. Talk about how you've used tools like Gantt charts, MS Project, or even simple Excel trackers to sequence tasks and avoid delays. Be ready to explain a time you recovered a slipping schedule.

    4. Bring your communication receipts: Supervisors are the bridge between management and crews. Prepare a story about a time you resolved a conflict between a subcontractor and your team, or how you kept the project manager informed with clear daily reports.

    5. Know your materials and methods: Expect technical questions on concrete curing, rebar placement, or waterproofing. Brush up on local construction practices and be ready to discuss how you ensure quality on site, like doing slump tests or checking formwork alignment.

    6. Show you can manage costs: Budget management is a core duty. Have an example of how you tracked material usage, reduced waste, or negotiated with suppliers to stay under budget. Even a small win shows fiscal responsibility.

    7. Prepare for behavioral questions: They'll probe how you handle pressure, mistakes, and difficult workers. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and keep your answers specific to construction scenarios, like a weather delay or a safety violation.

    8. Ask smart questions: At the end, ask about the project pipeline, the size of the crew you'd lead, and how safety performance is measured. This shows you're thinking about the role's real demands, not just the title.
