Master the Coffee Processing Flow Before You Walk In

This role is a launchpad into coffee engineering, so the hiring team will look for hands-on curiosity and a solid grasp of mechanical basics. Show them you already understand the journey from cherry to export, and you'll stand out.

    1. Know the machinery: Research the key equipment mentioned—Bühler Sortex, graders, gravity tables—and be ready to discuss how they work. Even if you haven't used them, showing you've studied them signals genuine interest.

    2. Highlight hands-on projects: On your CV, list any practical maintenance or repair work you've done, even if it's from school projects or personal tinkering. Describe what you fixed, the tools you used, and the outcome.

    3. Prepare for troubleshooting questions: Expect scenarios like 'a conveyor stops suddenly—what do you check?' Practice a logical, step-by-step approach that covers safety first, then electrical, then mechanical causes.

    4. Show safety awareness: Emphasize your knowledge of PPE, lockout/tagout, and risk assessments. Mention any safety training you've had, and always frame your answers with safety as the priority.

    5. Understand the production pressure: Coffee processing runs on tight schedules. Talk about times you've worked under deadlines, kept your cool, and still delivered quality results.

    6. Communicate your learning attitude: This is a trainee role, so they expect you to learn fast. Give examples of when you picked up a new skill quickly, whether it's a software tool or a repair technique.

    7. Connect with the coffee context: Read up on Kenya's coffee industry, the importance of quality grading, and how processing affects the final product. Mentioning this shows you're not just after any engineering job—you're after this one.

    8. Ask smart questions: At the interview, ask about the typical challenges in their factory, the team structure, and what a successful trainee looks like after a year. It shows you're already thinking about how to contribute long-term.
