Finance roles in research and consultancy demand precision with numbers and compliance. Hiring managers will probe your hands-on experience with PAYE, NHIF, and NSSF, so be ready to demonstrate your fluency.

    1. Quantify your experience: On your CV, list specific figures you've handled—monthly payroll amounts, budgets managed, or audit findings resolved. Numbers speak louder than vague claims.

    2. Prepare a QuickBooks walkthrough: Be ready to explain how you set up a chart of accounts, reconcile bank statements, and generate management reports in QuickBooks. If you've used other software, highlight transferable skills.

    3. Know the tax calendar: Familiarize yourself with Kenyan tax deadlines—PAYE, VAT, and income tax filings. Mentioning your awareness shows you're proactive about compliance.

    4. Show project budget tracking: Describe a time you monitored a project budget, controlled field expenditure, and reported variances. Use the STAR method to structure your answer.

    5. Highlight audit support: If you've assisted with internal or external audits, detail your role—preparing schedules, responding to queries, or implementing recommendations.

    6. Emphasize Excel skills: Beyond basic formulas, mention pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data visualization. You might be asked to perform a live test, so practice common tasks.

    7. Research sector insight: Understand how accounting in research or consultancy differs—grant accounting, cost allocation, and donor reporting. Show you've done your homework.

    8. Ask smart questions: In the interview, ask about the company's current financial systems, reporting cycles, and team structure. This shows genuine interest and strategic thinking.

CareerSasa Safety Alert: Never pay employers or agencies for interviews, training, or job placement. Does a job request payment? Report it immediately using the "Flag" button. While CareerSasa vets job postings thoroughly, always verify opportunities independently.
