Show Your Ledger Discipline Before You Walk Into Finance

Finance internships get flooded with vague 'I love numbers' claims. Hiring teams for this kind of post want proof you can reconcile, spot discrepancies, and keep records clean under month-end pressure.

    1. Lead with your Excel skills: On your CV, list specific Excel functions you know (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, SUMIFS) and give a quick example of a time you used them to organize data. If you have a sample spreadsheet from a class project, mention it.

    2. Show you understand AR and GL basics: Even if you're a fresh graduate, be ready to explain what Accounts Receivable aging is and how a General Ledger works. Practice a simple example of a journal entry.

    3. Prepare for a practical test: Many finance interviews include a quick Excel or reconciliation exercise. Practice matching transactions, spotting errors, and formatting reports cleanly.

    4. Highlight your attention to detail: Give a concrete example from school or work where you caught a mistake or double-checked your work. Finance managers want to see you care about accuracy.

    5. Know the company: Twyford is a major tile manufacturer in Kenya. Mention that you understand the importance of accurate receivables in a manufacturing business with many customers.

    6. Be ready to talk about confidentiality: Finance handles sensitive data. Prepare a short answer on how you would handle confidential information responsibly.

    7. Ask smart questions: In the interview, ask about the ERP system they use, the size of the AR team, and what a typical day looks like. This shows genuine interest.

    8. Show you're a fast learner: Since it's an internship, emphasize your willingness to learn and adapt. Give an example of a time you picked up a new skill quickly.

CareerSasa Safety Alert: Never pay employers or agencies for interviews, training, or job placement. Does a job request payment? Report it immediately using the "Flag" button. While CareerSasa vets job postings thoroughly, always verify opportunities independently.
