Show How You Build Ventures That Survive Contact With Reality
This role sits at the intersection of strategy, finance, and hands-on programme delivery. Hiring managers will be looking for proof that you can design a venture pipeline, manage budgets across countries, and still keep your eye on poverty and climate goals.
1. Lead with a venture you actually built: Pick one venture or programme you took from idea to scale. Walk through how you sourced it, what the business model looked like, and the specific support you gave. Numbers matter — how many ventures, what growth, what impact.
2. Show you can manage money without losing the mission: Budgets here are not just spreadsheets. Talk about how you allocated resources across activities, tracked expenditure, and made trade-offs that kept impact high. Mention any donor compliance you handled.
3. Prove you know agri-tech and climate resilience: This is not generic venture building. Be ready to discuss trends in agri-tech, how climate risk affects smallholder farmers, and what business models actually work. Reference specific examples from East Africa.
4. Demonstrate your stakeholder muscle: You will juggle internal teams, external partners, and consultants. Give examples of how you aligned different interests, managed expectations, and kept communication flowing. Mention any tricky negotiations.
5. Show you think in systems, not silos: The role wants you to build synergies and feedback loops. Describe how you connected different programmes or partners to create a continuum of support. Show you see the whole ecosystem.
6. Bring your MEL toolkit: Development impact is core. Talk about how you designed indicators, collected data, and used learning to adapt programmes. Give an example of a time evidence changed your approach.
7. Prepare for the 'how do you scale?' question: Scaling ventures is hard. Be ready to discuss what makes ventures scalable, how you support growth, and what happens when they graduate. Show you have thought about sustainability beyond donor funding.
8. Show you can advocate and communicate: This role includes influencing and communications. Give examples of how you have represented a programme publicly, written for different audiences, or shaped policy conversations. Show you can tell a compelling story with data.
