Master the Ethics Interview: From Policy to Practice

This role sits at the heart of IOM's regional operations, so the hiring panel will probe how you translate legal frameworks into everyday guidance for staff. They want someone who can handle sensitive cases with discretion and still deliver training that sticks.

    1. Show your legal precision: On your CV, highlight specific cases where you analyzed allegations of misconduct or retaliation. Use concrete examples that demonstrate your ability to apply legal standards to messy facts. Mention any experience with international administrative law or employment law.

    2. Prepare a training demo: Since you'll lead ethics trainings, be ready to present a short session on a topic like conflicts of interest or whistleblower protections. Show that you can simplify complex rules for a diverse audience.

    3. Emphasize your neutrality: This role demands impartiality. Share examples where you handled a sensitive issue without bias, and explain how you maintain objectivity under pressure.

    4. Know the UN system: Familiarize yourself with IOM's structure, the Standards of Conduct, and recent ethics trends in the region. Mention any prior experience with international organizations.

    5. Highlight your advisory skills: Be ready to discuss how you've advised management on ethics matters. Provide a specific instance where your advice influenced a decision or policy.

    6. Show your capacity-building flair: Talk about designing and delivering training programs, including train-the-trainer sessions. Quantify the reach if possible, like number of staff trained.

    7. Demonstrate resilience: The role involves a heavy workload. Share how you've managed multiple priorities and tight deadlines without compromising quality.

    8. Ask sharp questions: Prepare thoughtful questions about the team's current ethics challenges, how success is measured, and the regional context. This shows genuine interest and strategic thinking.
