Show Your Data Wrangling Chops Before You Walk Into the Interview
This role lives inside a humanitarian research lab, so the hiring team will be scanning for evidence that you can turn messy field data into clean, defensible findings. They are not just looking for a degree — they want proof you can handle real datasets under pressure.
1. Lead with a portfolio of your analysis: Put together a short portfolio or GitHub repo showing 2–3 pieces of quantitative or qualitative analysis you have done. For each, include a one-paragraph summary of the research question, your cleaning steps, and the key insight. This gives the panel something concrete to probe.
2. Be ready to talk about data cleaning: Expect a question like 'Tell us about a time you cleaned a messy dataset.' Prepare a story that covers the mess, the steps you took, and how you verified the quality. Mention specific tools (Stata, R, Python) and any checks you ran.
3. Know your inferential statistics cold: Review t-tests, regression, and basic causal inference concepts. You might be asked to interpret a regression table or explain how you would handle missing data. Brush up on the intuition behind these methods.
4. Show you can write for non-specialists: The job involves drafting reports and briefs for practitioners and policymakers. Prepare a short writing sample that translates a technical finding into plain language. If you have a blog post or policy brief, bring it.
5. Connect your experience to education research: Even if your background is in economics or statistics, show you understand the education context. Read up on foundational learning and education in emergencies. Mention any relevant coursework or volunteer work.
6. Prepare for behavioral questions about collaboration: This role works across teams, so expect questions about how you handle competing priorities and feedback. Have a story about working with colleagues from different disciplines or departments.
7. Demonstrate your adaptability: The lab is fast-paced and projects shift. Share an example of when you had to pivot or learn a new tool quickly. Highlight your ability to stay organized under pressure.
8. Ask smart questions about the research agenda: Prepare 2–3 questions about the current education research priorities, the team's use of implementation research, or how findings are disseminated. This shows genuine interest and strategic thinking.
