The position involves leading project development, managing technical studies and documentation, applying safeguards and governance frameworks, and coordinating with partners and consultants. The role requires significant travel within Africa and collaboration across global teams.

    • Lead the preparation and review of technical studies, project documentation, and other project deliverables required to support project development and implementation.
    • Support the application of safeguards, governance frameworks, benefit-sharing approaches, and other project integrity requirements throughout project development and implementation.
    • Develop and manage project workplans, schedules, budgets, risks, and reporting requirements to ensure projects progress effectively through the project development lifecycle.
    • Manage technical consultants and other service providers, including development of Terms of Reference, review of technical deliverables, and monitoring consultant performance.
    • Identify technical and implementation challenges and work with project teams, partners, and technical specialists to develop practical solutions.
    • Conduct field visits to monitor project progress, assess implementation challenges, support project partners, and provide technical input during project development.
    • Prepare project updates and progress reports for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring reporting requirements are met accurately and on time.
    • Promote knowledge sharing, lessons learned, and good practices across projects to improve quality and consistency of project development.
    • Collaborate with Finance, Grants and Contracts, Legal, and other support teams to ensure projects comply with CI policies, donor agreements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
    • Support the review of project financial and grant reports to ensure resources are managed in accordance with approved budgets and project agreements.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project management systems, operational processes, and project development approaches across the Nature Markets portfolio.
    • Does not have direct supervisory authority. Act as a technical or subject matter expert to peers and other staff. Will be responsible for managing project-related budgets, consultants, and vendors but decisions that bind or commit CI are approved by the immediate supervisor. May lead project teams.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated experience supporting the technical development and implementation of nature market, carbon or conservation finance projects, including project scoping, technical due diligence, project design, technical studies, and project implementation.
    • Strong understanding of the ecological, safeguards, social, governance, legal, and financial considerations required to develop high-integrity nature or carbon market projects.
    • Demonstrated project management experience, including developing workplans, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing consultants and technical service providers, and delivering projects against agreed objectives, timelines, and budgets.

    Master the Project Development Lifecycle

This role sits at the heart of nature market projects, so your ability to move from scoping to implementation will be tested. Hiring managers will probe how you've handled technical due diligence, stakeholder alignment, and budget discipline in past roles.

    1. Showcase your project portfolio: On your CV, list 2-3 nature or carbon projects you've developed, highlighting your specific role, the mechanisms used (e.g., PES, biodiversity credits), and outcomes. Quantify where possible, like hectares covered or credits issued.

    2. Prepare for technical deep-dives: Expect questions on safeguards, governance, and benefit-sharing. Review CI's safeguards framework and be ready to discuss how you've applied them in practice.

    3. Demonstrate stakeholder finesse: You'll work with governments, NGOs, and communities. Share examples of how you've navigated conflicting interests and built consensus.

    4. Prove your financial acumen: You'll manage budgets and consultants. Be ready to talk about how you've tracked costs, managed vendor contracts, and ensured donor compliance.

    5. Highlight your field experience: Frequent travel to remote areas is required. Emphasize any fieldwork you've done, showing you're comfortable with rustic conditions and can adapt quickly.

    6. Show your reporting rigor: You'll prepare updates for stakeholders. Bring samples of progress reports or dashboards you've created that clearly communicate complex information.

    7. Emphasize your problem-solving: Projects hit roadblocks. Prepare stories where you identified a challenge and implemented a practical solution, showing your analytical and creative thinking.

    8. Align with CI's mission: Research Conservation International's current nature markets initiatives and be ready to discuss how your experience aligns with their goals. This shows genuine interest and strategic thinking.
