Show You Can Own the Full Transaction Trail
This role lives and dies by audit-ready records and clean month-end closes. Hiring managers will probe how you've handled missing invoices, tight deadlines, and tricky reconciliations before — so bring proof, not just promises.
1. Quantify your financial control wins: On your CV, show the size of budgets you've managed, the number of transactions you've processed monthly, and any times you reduced reconciliation errors or cleared backlogs. Numbers like 'reconciled 500+ transactions monthly' or 'cut month-end close from 10 days to 5' speak louder than generic claims.
2. Prepare a story about a missing document: Think of a time you discovered a missing invoice or an unreconciled transaction. Walk through how you flagged it, chased it, and fixed the root cause. Managers want to see you act before it becomes an audit finding.
3. Know your Kenyan tax and banking basics: Be ready to discuss PAYE, VAT, withholding tax, and common banking practices like M-Pesa reconciliation. Even if the role isn't tax-heavy, showing you understand the local regulatory landscape builds confidence.
4. Show you can explain finance to non-finance folks: This role talks to division heads and field teams. Prepare a simple example of how you'd explain a budget variance or a payment hold to someone without a finance background — clarity is a skill.
5. Highlight any compliance or certification experience: If you've worked with grant compliance, carbon credit audits, or similar, put it front and center. The posting mentions this as a bonus, so it could be your edge.
6. Demonstrate your escalation judgment: Describe a situation where you had to hold a payment or escalate an issue. What was your reasoning? How did you communicate it? This shows you understand when to pause and when to push.
7. Bring a sample of your reporting: If you can, prepare a redacted example of a monthly financial report you've compiled. It shows you can produce clear, timely reports that decision-makers actually use.
8. Ask about the audit trail: In your interview, ask how the team currently handles documentation for carbon credit certification or audits. It shows you're already thinking about the bigger picture and the systems you'll own.
