Show You Can Own the Month-End Close

This role sits at the heart of the finance team, where accuracy and speed keep the whole operation moving. Hiring managers will be looking for proof you can handle the pressure of deadlines and the detail of reconciliations without dropping a beat.

    1. Lead with your CPA progress: On your CV, put your CPA Section 3 status right at the top of your education. If you have any exemptions or are partway through, state that clearly — it shows commitment and momentum.

    2. Prove your Excel muscle: Be ready to talk about specific Excel functions you use daily, like VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and SUMIFS. If you've built a spreadsheet that saved time or reduced errors, mention it as a concrete example.

    3. Rehearse your reconciliation story: Expect a question about a time you found a discrepancy during a bank reconciliation. Walk through how you spotted it, what you did to investigate, and how you resolved it — that's the kind of detail that sets you apart.

    4. Know your statutory numbers: Brush up on current VAT, PAYE, and withholding tax rates in Kenya. You don't need to be a tax expert, but showing you know the basics will reassure them you can handle the compliance side.

    5. Show you can work the system: If you've used any accounting software like QuickBooks, Sage, or even Excel-based ledgers, list it. If you've used M-Pesa for business payments, that's a plus — mention it.

    6. Prepare a 30-60-90 day plan: Even if they don't ask, having a simple plan for your first three months shows you're serious. Focus on learning their systems, building relationships with the finance team, and mastering the month-end routine.

    7. Ask about the team's biggest challenge: In the interview, ask what the finance team struggles with most right now — maybe it's turnaround time on payments or a messy reconciliation. Then explain how your skills could help.

    8. Bring a sample of your work: If you have a non-confidential spreadsheet or a report you've prepared, offer to walk them through it. It's a powerful way to show your actual ability, not just talk about it.
