Master the Paper Trail: Legal Documentation in Real Estate

This role sits at the heart of property transactions, where a single missing signature or misplaced file can stall a sale. Hiring managers will look for someone who treats documentation as a discipline, not a chore.

    1. Show your file management system: On your CV, describe how you organize legal files, track deadlines, and maintain confidentiality. Mention specific tools like SharePoint or Dropbox if you've used them, and give an example of a time you caught an error before it became a problem.

    2. Prove your follow-up skills: Real estate deals involve many parties—clients, lawyers, government offices. Give a concrete example of a time you chased a document or approval and got it done on time. Quantify the outcome if possible.

    3. Brush up on Kenyan property law: Be ready to discuss the basics of land transactions, title transfers, and due diligence. You don't need to be a lawyer, but showing you understand the process will set you apart.

    4. Prepare for a document review test: Many employers give a practical exercise where you must spot errors in a contract or checklist. Practice reviewing sample agreements for missing clauses, incorrect dates, or inconsistent terms.

    5. Highlight your communication style: You'll be the bridge between clients and legal professionals. Prepare to explain how you simplify complex legal jargon for clients while keeping lawyers in the loop. A short example in an interview can be powerful.

    6. Show you can handle pressure: Property deals can be stressful, with tight deadlines and anxious clients. Think of a time you stayed calm and organized under pressure—maybe during a busy season or a difficult transaction.

    7. Know your software: Microsoft Office is a must, but also mention any document management systems you've used. If you're not familiar with one, say you're a quick learner and give an example of learning new software fast.

    8. Ask smart questions: In the interview, ask about the team structure, the volume of transactions, and how they handle confidentiality. This shows you're thinking about the role seriously and helps you decide if it's the right fit.
