    Job Description

BURN is looking for a Payroll Consultant to ensure a smooth, accurate, and timely payroll delivery throughout the engagement. This is a delivery-focused role rather than a development role, with responsibility for accurate payroll processing, timely statutory filings, and a clean handover at the end of the assignment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Run the full monthly payroll cycle end-to-end for our workforce, meeting internal and statutory deadlines
    • Collect, verify and process daily, weekly and monthly timesheets, including production and shift-based staff
    • Enter and maintain payroll data for new hires, leavers, promotions, transfers and salary changes
    • Calculate and remit statutory deductions and returns such as PAYE, SHIF, NSSF, NITA, Housing Levy, HELB
    • Process and distribute payslips, and respond to employee payroll queries promptly and discreetly
    • Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, escalating anything material
    • Take a structured handover at the start of the assignment and give one at the end

    Required Qualifications

    • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or a related field
    • At least three years running payroll in Kenya, with full ownership of a monthly cycle
    • Working knowledge of Kenyan statutory deductions and returns, and of the Employment Act 2007
    • Strong Excel skills
    • Demonstrable accuracy under deadline pressure, and absolute discretion with confidential data
    • Availability to start immediately and commit for the full three months
    • CPA part-qualified or above
    • Payroll experience in manufacturing or another high-headcount, multi-shift environment
    • Experience with casual, contract or seasonal worker payroll

    Master the Kenyan Payroll Cycle

This role demands precision and speed. Hiring managers will look for proof you can handle statutory filings and high-volume payroll without missing a beat.

    1. Show your statutory fluency: List every statutory deduction you've handled (PAYE, SHIF, NSSF, NITA, Housing Levy, HELB) on your CV. Be ready to explain the latest rates and filing deadlines.

    2. Demonstrate Excel muscle: Expect a test on VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and formulas. Practice these before the interview.

    3. Prepare a payroll war story: Have a concrete example of a discrepancy you caught and resolved. Describe the steps you took and the outcome.

    4. Understand the Employment Act 2007: Review key provisions on leave, overtime, and termination. You may be asked how they affect payroll.

    5. Highlight multi-shift experience: If you've handled payroll for shift workers, emphasize it. This role involves production staff, so that experience is gold.

    6. Commit to confidentiality: Payroll data is sensitive. Show you have systems for protecting it, like password-protected files and secure sharing.

    7. Plan your handover: Since this is a contract, the hiring team wants a clean exit. Describe how you document processes and train others before leaving.

    8. Be ready to start now: They need someone immediately. If you're available, say so upfront and be prepared to hit the ground running.

CareerSasa Safety Alert: Never pay employers or agencies for interviews, training, or job placement. Does a job request payment? Report it immediately using the "Flag" button. While CareerSasa vets job postings thoroughly, always verify opportunities independently.
