Show Financial Stewardship and Capacity Building in Action
This role is about more than crunching numbers — it's about building systems and people. Hiring managers will probe how you've strengthened local NGOs, managed donor funds, and mentored teams under pressure.
1. Quantify your impact: On your CV, show numbers: size of budgets managed, number of staff supervised, audit outcomes, or % improvement in reporting timeliness. For example, 'Managed a $500k donor budget with 100% compliance' beats vague claims.
2. Prepare a capacity-building story: Be ready to describe a time you coached a local accountant or finance team. What tools did you use? How did you measure progress? This role is a secondment — they want proof you can transfer skills.
3. Know donor compliance inside out: Brush up on common donor rules (e.g., USAID, DFID, EU) and Kenyan statutory requirements (PAYE, NSSF, SHA, Housing Levy). Expect scenario questions on handling disallowed costs or audit findings.
4. Show your HR muscle: Even though it's finance-heavy, you'll handle HR. Highlight experience with recruitment, performance management, and labour law compliance. Mention any HR certifications.
5. Demonstrate advanced Excel: Be prepared to talk about specific Excel skills: pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modeling, or using accounting software like QuickBooks or SAP. Bring examples of reports you've built.
6. Align with the mission: This is an NGO role. Show genuine passion for environmental or community work. Research Kiptapkei Environmental CBO and Save the Children's work in Kenya to speak their language.
7. Prepare for 'hands-on' questions: Expect questions about day-to-day tasks: processing payments, preparing payroll, filing statutory returns. They need someone who can do the work, not just delegate.
8. Ask smart questions: In your interview, ask about the transition plan for the secondment, the current state of KTK's finance systems, and how success will be measured. This shows strategic thinking and genuine interest.
