Own the P&L: What BURN's Hiring Team Will Probe
This role is a full P&L ownership position in a high-growth, multi-market environment. The hiring team will be looking for evidence that you can build a business unit from the ground up, not just manage one. They'll probe your commercial acumen, your ability to negotiate with C-suite and government stakeholders, and your track record in scaling revenue across diverse African markets.
1. Quantify your P&L impact: On your CV and in interviews, show specific numbers: revenue growth, margin improvements, cost savings, or market share gains you delivered. For example, "grew B2B sales from $2M to $5M in 18 months" is far more compelling than "responsible for sales growth."
2. Show your go-to-market playbook: Be ready to walk through how you've entered a new market or launched a product category. What segments did you target? How did you price? What partnerships did you forge? BURN wants to see a repeatable, data-driven approach.
3. Demonstrate stakeholder muscle: This role involves negotiating with utilities, DFIs, and government feeding programmes. Prepare stories that show you can navigate complex, multi-stakeholder deals and build long-term partnerships.
4. Understand the energy access landscape: Even if you're not an expert, show you've done your homework on electric cooking, PAYGo, and carbon finance. Mention how these models can unlock adoption in institutional kitchens.
5. Highlight your team-building track record: You'll be recruiting and leading a pan-African team. Give examples of how you've hired, developed, and motivated sales teams across different cultures.
6. Prepare for case-style questions: Expect questions like "How would you price a cook-to-own model for a hospital chain in Nigeria?" or "What's your 90-day plan for this BU?" Practice structuring your answers with clear logic and financial reasoning.
7. Show your cultural agility: With multi-country experience, you'll need to demonstrate that you can adapt your style to different markets. Share specific examples of how you've adjusted your approach in different African countries.
8. Be ready to talk about travel: The role requires up to 50% travel. Show that you're prepared for that lifestyle and that you have strategies for staying effective while on the road.
