    About Kenya BioVax Institute

The Kenya BioVax Institute (KBI) is a state corporation under the Ministry of Health established to manufacture, package, and commercialize vaccines, biologics, and other medical products. KBI’s vision is to make Kenya a regional hub for vaccine and biopharmaceutical production, advancing health security through self-reliance and innovation.

As part of its expansion and operational readiness, KBI seeks to recruit a Manager, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) — a dynamic leader responsible for driving the institute’s environmental sustainability, occupational safety, and regulatory compliance strategies.

    Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Technical Operations, the Manager, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) will provide strategic leadership in the planning, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of occupational health, safety, and environmental programs across KBI’s operations.

This role ensures a safe working environment for all employees and promotes compliance with Kenyan and international SHE standards in vaccine production and related laboratory environments.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. SHE Policy Development and Implementation

    • Formulate, review, and implement Safety, Health, and Environmental policies in alignment with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA, 2007) and NEMA regulations.
    • Establish and maintain internal standards and best practices for laboratory and biomanufacturing safety.
    • Integrate sustainability principles into organizational operations to minimize waste and reduce carbon footprint.

    2. Compliance and Risk Management

    • Ensure full compliance with all relevant national laws, WHO-GMP, ISO 45001, and environmental management standards.
    • Identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement preventive and corrective actions.
    • Manage and maintain statutory records, licenses, and certifications from DOSHS, NEMA, and related regulatory bodies.

    3. Safety Culture and Training

    • Develop and deliver SHE awareness programs, emergency drills, and targeted staff training to reinforce safety culture.
    • Champion behavioral safety initiatives and incident reporting systems that encourage proactive risk management.
    • Train and mentor departmental safety representatives to ensure effective implementation at all operational levels.

    4. Auditing and Continuous Improvement

    • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and environmental impact assessments.
    • Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions to prevent recurrence.
    • Implement a continuous improvement framework using KPIs to track SHE performance.
    • Prepare periodic reports for management and stakeholders, highlighting trends, risks, and progress.

    5. Emergency Preparedness and Response

    • Lead the design, testing, and updating of Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) for fire, chemical, biological, and environmental incidents.
    • Coordinate with local authorities, fire brigades, and medical facilities for emergency preparedness.
    • Ensure availability of first-aid equipment, fire extinguishers, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

    6. Leadership and Collaboration

    • Collaborate cross-functionally with production, maintenance, and quality teams to align operational goals with safety standards.
    • Supervise SHE staff and ensure their development through training and mentorship.
    • Represent KBI in SHE-related meetings with government agencies and international partners.

    Required Qualifications

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
    • Master’s degree or postgraduate diploma in Safety, Health and Environment is an added advantage.
    • Registration with DOSHS as a Safety and Health Advisor is mandatory.
    • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience, with at least 3 in a managerial or supervisory role within a pharmaceutical, chemical, or manufacturing environment.
    • Certification in ISO 45001, NEBOSH, or Environmental Management Systems (EMS) preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead audits, manage risk, and foster organizational safety culture.

    Key Competencies

    • Deep understanding of OSHA 2007, Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), and related Kenyan laws.
    • Strong analytical, leadership, and decision-making skills.
    • Excellent communication and training abilities.
    • High integrity, attention to detail, and ability to influence safety-driven behavior across teams.

    🧭 CareerSasa Insight

Safety and environmental leadership has evolved from compliance to strategy. Kenya’s health and manufacturing sectors are now investing heavily in safety modernization — with SHE managers emerging as key risk leaders.

If you want to stand out in a competitive field like this, your application should show technical mastery, policy leadership, and a passion for preventive safety culture.

8 CareerSasa Application Tips for SHE Managers

1️⃣ Showcase Your Impact with Data: Don’t just say you “improved safety.” Quantify it — “Reduced incident rate by 30% through ISO 45001 implementation.” Employers trust measurable results; data-backed candidates are 68% more likely to be shortlisted.

2️⃣ Highlight Multi-Sector Knowledge: Link your experience to regulated industries (pharma, energy, food). Cross-sector safety adaptability is highly valued — especially in Kenya’s growing vaccine manufacturing ecosystem.

3️⃣ Lead with Compliance Credentials: If you’re registered with DOSHS or hold NEBOSH/ISO 45001, place it prominently on your CV. These certifications can raise your pay by up to 20%, according to regional salary benchmarks.

4️⃣ Emphasize Preventive Thinking: Show how you anticipate and mitigate risk before it happens — that’s modern SHE leadership. Use verbs like “forecasted,” “simulated,” “proactively reduced.”

5️⃣ Demonstrate Crisis Readiness: Discuss how you’ve handled incidents or emergency drills. Real-life crisis experience can make you stand out in interviews.

6️⃣ Align with Sustainability Trends: Highlight green initiatives or waste reduction projects you’ve led. Environmental stewardship is a rising KPI in most government-linked and private firms.

7️⃣ Build Visibility Online: Update your LinkedIn headline to read something like “Registered SHE Advisor | ISO 45001 Certified | Building Safer Workplaces.” Professionals with optimized LinkedIn profiles get 3× more recruiter engagement.

8️⃣ Personalize Your Application Letter: Address the specific mission of Kenya BioVax — mention “public health innovation,” “biosafety,” and “pharma-grade safety standards.” Personalization demonstrates commitment and research depth.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    1. Is this a permanent position?

No. The Manager, SHE position is a contractual role but has long-term strategic responsibilities tied to KBI’s operational growth.

    2. Do I need pharmaceutical experience?

While preferred, candidates with strong SHE experience in regulated environments (manufacturing, healthcare, energy) are encouraged to apply.

    3. What’s the interview process?

Expect a two-stage evaluation: a technical assessment on SHE management principles, followed by a panel interview focusing on leadership and compliance strategy.

    4. Can international certifications substitute local registration?

International credentials are highly valued, but local DOSHS registration remains mandatory per Kenyan regulations.
